Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is the only college of its kind in the world offering further and higher education opportunities through the medium of Scottish Gaelic.
The College has a diverse student population, with a cross-section of ages and different nationalities. Though most of our students come from within Scotland and the UK, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig has welcomed students from as far afield as North America, mainland Europe and Asia. Many graduates of the College have gone on to Gaelic-related employment, adding their talent and skills to the continuance of the language.
The College environment encompasses three campuses, Àrainn Chaluim Chille, Fàs and Àrainn Ostaig, which are only a few minutes’ walk apart. Its spectacular coastal location overlooks the Sound of Sleat, across to Knoydart on the mainland.
Àrainn Chaluim Chille
The Àrainn Chaluim Chille campus was opened in 1999, greatly expanding the College's facilities and resources. Comprising of the main hub building, a residential block and the tower, Lòchran an Dòmhnallaich, Àrainn Chaluim Chille received an architectural award from the Royal Incorporation of Architects.
The main building at Àrainn Chaluim Chille contains a mix of facilities for academic provision, research, business and social events, bringing together students, staff, the local community and visitors to the College. Sabhal Mòr Ostaig hosts a variety of events, including conferences, weddings, launches and festivals.
Fàs
The new centre for creative and cultural industries, opened in 2008, hosts a state-of-the-art television and broadcast studio, a new community learning centre and is the base for some of the College’s existing staff and projects including Lèirsinn, Faclair na Gàidhlig, Tobar an Dualchais and the multi-media company Cànan. It is also home to the Gaelic-medium childcare facility, Fàs Mòr which can take up to 45 children from birth to school age.
There is a workshop and exhibition space for the visual arts and it is the base for the Artists in Residency programme.
Àrainn Ostaig
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig has grown around the original farm buildings at Àrainn Ostaig where the College was first established. The original stone buildings have been added to, providing additional accommodation, office space and teaching facilities.
