Environmental policies

The college's environmental policies, practices and overview of their impact

The College fully supports working in partnership with the community and other partners to develop policies to reduce its carbon footprint.

The College’s main building is currently heated by using a Biomass Boiler named “Beasag Mhòr”.  Woodchip for Beasag Mhòr is purchased from the local Community Trust. The boiler will also be able to heat our newest building FAS by the end of the year.

The College has recycling areas for cardboard, glass, plastic and paper situated in the main car park and in each building.

The College also uses “Big Hana” which can be fed cardboard (mainly from kitchen deliveries) and turns it into compost which is then used on the College’s grounds to grow vegetables which can be used in the refectory.

The College is trying to reduce its levels of energy usage.  Staff awareness is being increased in terms of simple changes like switching off lights when not in use, double sided printing and unplugging of electronic equipment.

The College has recently joined the Cyclescheme project which allows staff to purchase a bike using a salary sacrifice saving both themselves and College on taxes.  This scheme encourages staff to cycle to work therefore reducing their daily carbon footprint.
