'Another Strand of the Celtic Thread'
Join Dr Fred Freeman at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig for 5 days of exploring in depth the achievements of three great Scots song-writers:
Robert Burns, Robert Tannahill and Hamish Henderson
Under close invertigation will be the cross currents running through the Scots tradition, like the strong influence of the Gaelic and Irish traditions upon it: the ever present basis of the songs: the Scots language with its relation to Northumbrian, Gaelic, Norse, Flemish and other traditiongs.
This will be a musical listening experience with examples drawn from Freeman's recordings of all 3 songwriters : mouth-music, love songs, bawdy songs and songs of protest.
Dr Freeman's course will run from 16 to 20 August 2010
Dr Freeman is an Hon Fellow in English at the University of Edinburgh, and producer of the internationally acclaimed COMPLETE SONGS OF ROBERT BURNS 912 Vols, Linn Records).
