This is a five day intensive course focussing on tuition in traditional percussive dance (Stepdance).

The course provides an intensive learning situation for dancers of all levels who wish to acquire basic skills or advance beyond their current level, as well as deepen their knowledge of the music, song, language and culture of the west coast of Scotland.

Students will be divided into 2 groups according to ability and previous experience, and will benefit from tuition by 2 of Scotland’s foremost traditional dancers.  Students will also have the opportunity to attend evening workshops in Gaelic puirt-a-beul, whose rhythms reflect the dance steps, as well as in cèilidh dance and percussive dance from other cultures.

The course will consist of daily dance workshops, beginning on Monday morning.

Through the week the following technical points will be covered :–

  • Positioning of feet, dance style, visual appearance, timing, musicality of dance.

  • Throughout the week the groups will study a large palette of steps, mainly in the traditional strathspey and reel timing, as well as jig timing and improvisation.

  • Particular emphasis will be placed on personal style and freedom of interpretation, and students will be encouraged to create their own step combinations.

Cèilidh dances will be taught within the daily workshops, and will consist of a mixture of couple and dances and grouped dances. Evenings will be taken up with optional events, at which there will be an opportunity to enjoy and use in situ the dances learned in the class.  The week will culminate in short group performances shared with students at an end-of-course Cèilidh.

The course is open to learners of all abilities, including those with NO previous knowledge or experience of the subject.

Flat, leather soled shoes work best, but you can wear any kind of footwear that is comfortable for dancing in.
Though if you are footsore after a day or two we may to be able to offer you foot and leg massage by a trained therapist!!
