Since its foundation, the College has drawn strength and support from its links with development groups, businesses and initiatives at local, national and international levels.

On-campus Organisations

The College's core academic activities are complemented by the various organisations and projects on-campus. The presence of a wide range of skills and expertise within the college environment fosters collaboration and allows students to become involved in Gaelic developments.

Cànan is an independent, multi-media organisation with a particular capability in Gaelic-related projects. Cànan works in four principle areas - multimedia and graphic design, marketing, publishing and Gaelic services. Within these areas the company offers a wide range of compatible services catering for the individual through to larger organisations such as local authorities. The Lèirsinn Research Centre was formed in 1992 to provide research services to the Gaelic communities and is involved in a wide range of investigative and evaluative projects. Research work is commissioned from a variety of sponsoring bodies and Lèirsinn often works in association with other international research centres involved in the maintenance and development of lesser-used European languages. The Lèirsinn research team also supervise PhD students within the UHI Millennium Institute. For more information, call 01471 888550.

Photo of 2 people working on a computerIonad Nàiseanta na h-Imrich (National Research Centre for Migration Studies) was opened in 2003, in collaboration with the University of Aberdeen. The research centre's mission is to facilitate international class research, teaching and publication for the study of migration relating to the people of Scotland, helping to shape the policies of the future. The centre presents research seminars and hosts conferences and visiting speakers. For more information on past and present projects and findings, see the Ionad Nàiseanta na h-Imrich website.

Tosg is Scotland's only professional Gaelic theatre company, and is based at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. The company commissions new works in a variety of styles and performs for all age groups in Gaelic communities throughout Scotland. Tosg is also involved in creative projects encouraging and advising amateur drama groups and young people with an interest in acting.

Tobar an Dualchais is the largest cultural heritage digitisation project ever undertaken in Scotland. It aims to conserve, digitise, catalogue and make accessible on-line 18,000 hours of Gaelic and Scots sound recordings held in the collections of the School of Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh, BBC Scotland, and the National Trust for Scotland Campbell of Canna Collections. Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is a lead partner in the project. The Project Director is based at the College and more jobs are soon to be created, with most of these located in the Highlands and Islands. FÀS - Centre for Creative and Cultural Industries
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is developing a Centre for Creative and Cultural Industries, known as FÀS. This will enhance the College's role as a centre for Gaelic-related activities, and support business innovation and growth. For more information see the Future Development page.

Community Partnerships

SEALL is the local arts promotion group which organises an extensive programme of high quality events throughout the year, including the fortnight-long Fèis an Eilein. The range of events on offer includes theatre, dance, jazz, traditional and world music. Most events are held at the College and are well supported by the community and visitors to the area.

Club Film is the local award-winning film club. Club Film delivers a diverse film programme, using the audio and film projection facilities available at the College.

LearnDirect Scotland - Sabhal Mòr Ostaig continues to work in partnership with LearnDirect Scotland, developing flexible and accessible learning materials and courses. The College's Learning Centre is part of LearnDirect Scotland's learning network, which provides learning opportunities throughout the country.

Scottish Parliament Linked Library - As part of the Parliament's outreach service, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Library is a 'linked library' to the Scottish Parliament. Members of the public are able to access online parliamentary information and printed publications, in Gaelic and in English, and receive enquiry support.
