Christine Primrose, from Carloway, a village on the west side of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, is a native speaker of Scottish Gaelic. She has been singing from a young age and has performed worldwide and often in America, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Europe. Christine is a Mod Gold Medallist and her recent accolades include 'Gaelic Singer of the Year' at the Scots Traditional Music Awards in November 2009. Christine works at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig as a tutor on the (BA) Gaelic and Traditional Music Course.
In this 5 day residential course in Gaelic Song, students will be introduced to some basic Gaelic grammar and will also cover Gaelic pronunciation together with grammatical construction of sentences. The course will also study the historical and social contexts of the songs, together with discussions about the composers, their backgrounds and the influence of political, social and cultural circumstances at the time on their work.
This course is open to all students who have an interest in Gaelic songs and students are not required to have experience of singing on stage. At the end of the course students will have a small repertoire of Gaelic songs.
