Description

The MA (Hons) Gaelic with Education is a special collaborative partnership between the University of Aberdeen and UHI, the prospective university of the Highlands and Islands. The programme, which is delivered entirely through the medium of Gaelic, provides students with the opportunity to gain an honours award and teaching qualifcation in four years and allows a direct route to teacher education, in a field where there is a skills shortage. The course is designed for both Secondary Teaching, Gaelic as a subject, and Gaelic-medium Primary Teaching.

Course Content

You will be expected to have a basic knowledge of Gaelic when joining the course and, depending on your ability, will either study on the intensive Gaelic course, An Cùrsa Comais, or Gàidhlig is Conaltradh in your first year.

Students undertake Years 1 and 2 of the UHI Gaelic and Related Studies Scheme (GRSS) and, thereafter for years 3 and 4, a combined programme of University of Aberdeen Education/Professional Studies modules and GRSS modules.

The education/professional studies modules will be delivered predominantly through distance-learning mode, with a total of 18 weeks school experience spread over years 3 and 4.

Entry Requirements

• SQA passes in five different subjects of which three must be at Higher grade, preferably including Gàidhlig or Gaelic

• Other equivalent qualifications may be acceptable subject to the discretion of the programme leader

• Students without an SQA pass in Gaelic must satisfy the college of their ability in Gaelic

For entry to years 3 and 4, achievement of Higher English at Grade C or above, or equivalent, is required for both Secondary and Primary, and for Primary, Maths is required at Standard Grade (1/2) or Intermediate 2. You will also need a satisfactory interview.

For applicants with little or no previous knowledge of Gaelic, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig offers An Cùrsa Inntrigidh, a distance learning course which aims to prepare students for entry to year one of the degree programme.
