Description

Graduates, Gaelic speakers and researchers with a passionate interest in the life of the Highlands and Islands will enjoy this innovative postgraduate course. You will study aspects of the social history, customs and way of life of the Highlands and Islands through their material culture.  You will also explore new philosophical concepts for land-use, conservation and sustainable development.

The course is offered on a part-time basis over three years and is taught through the medium of Gaelic.

Course Content

The course has been developed in three parts with students able to gain intermediate awards of Postgraudate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma. In order to qualify for the Part 3 Masters Degree award, students are required to complete successfully the Research Dissertation which is a quadruple module.

The first year of the course includes the following modules:

    Material Culture and European Ethnology
    Material Culture; Research Methods
    Settlement and Land Use

The second year covers:

    Historical Perspectives
    Contemporary Issues
    Environment & Sustainability
    Migration; Cultural Continuity & Change
    Regions & Identity

To complete the third year, a research dissertation will be undertaken.

Entry Requirements

Ability in Gaelic is essential for the course and applicants will be required to attend an interview to demonstrate their language skills. The College offers courses which can bring students to a suitable level of fluency in the language such as An Cùrsa Inntrigidh and An Cùrsa Adhartais

Admission is open to students with an Honours Degree at 2:2 or above in a relevant subject area, such as Gaelic and Related Studies, Celtic Studies or Ethnology / Folklore Studies. Other disciplines, such as history, human geography and the social sciences will also be considered, subject to the necessary competence in Gaelic.

Applicants without these qualifications are also encouraged to make enquiries as professional experience in relevant subject areas will also be taken into consideration.
