Description

PGDE: Professional Graduate Diploma in Education
(Primary – Gaelic-medium pathway)

With the expansion of Gaelic-medium (GM) primary education, it is important that there are opportunities for students to access suitable teaching programmes. Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is part of the UHI network offering PGDE, a 1 year full-time post-graduate teaching qualification in primary education (Gaelic pathway). The course is offered in several colleges across the UHI network but Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is able to provide an additional opportunity to study in a supportive and immersive Gaelic environment. As well as college learning, students will undertake 19 weeks of professional practice placement in different GM primary settings. Applicants must have a relevant degree and must have a National 5 (or equivalent) qualification in Maths and a Higher (or equivalent) qualification in English. Gaelic will also be assessed as part of the selection process.

Professional Practice sessions in college will be delivered by experienced Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Teacher Education staff. There is an additional opportunity during college weeks to attend a language class to consolidate skills in preparation for GM teaching. Additional funding may be available for GM student teachers. There is further information about the structure of the course on the UHI website:

Further information about the Gaelic-medium pathway is available from Shona Cormack at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig: snc.smo@uhi.ac.uk
