[...] My purpose in this message is to let people know that Montreal
has a very active group: the Montreal Irish Language Study Circle, or
"COMHRA MONTREAL". This weekend, Nov.18-20, we will be hosting our
first full immersion weekend jsut north of Montreal. Over sixty
people will be attending this time (with a waiting list, but
space was limited) from Quebec, Ontario and the U.S. We will be
offering 8 classes and a special programme for children, so families
have been delighted to register too. We are also offering workshops
in tin whistle, Irish singing, set/ceili dancing - and of course
there's a great ceili planned for Saturday night
Our classes (3 levels) are held every Monday evening and we usually
have an attendance of between 30/40 participants each week. We have
also gone down to Esopus, N.Y. for Daltai weekends and also for the
week-long summer session. All this is to tell you that interest in
our language is growing immensely and "Comhra Montreal" is a very
welcome addition to the Irish cultural landscape here in Quebec.
Slán go fóill!

Annseo i Montreál, tá rang Gaeilge againn - An Scoil Scairte.
Cailín as Maigh Eo an múinteor, agus Gaeilge áluinn aici. Sa rang,
de gnáth, tá naonúr daltaí: ceathrar as Éirinn (3 BAC +1 Co
Lúbhadh), cailín as New Brunswick, beirt cailín as SAM a bhfuil
cónaí ortha i Montreál, buachail as Montreál agus cailín Francach
Ceanadach (ní fheadair an ceart é seo). Anois agus arís tagann
beirt cailín eile, ach is cailíní óga iad agus spéis acu i móran
rudaí eile, ach bíonn fáilte mór rómh nuair a bhíonn siad i
láthair. Ta na ceachtanna suimiúl agus bíonn spórt againn córá a
dhéanamh. Is iontach an feabhas atá déanta againn go léir ó
thosaigh an rang sa bhlian 1995. Tá cumann Caitealach sa chathair a
thugann seomra dúinn gach Luain, saor in aisce, agus is annseo a
bhailíonn an rang. Ní bheidh aon rang tar éis mí Bealtaine, am a
bheidh an samhra ag teacht (arsa mise go dúilmhear).
Náire orm nach bheith in ánn scríobh níos fearr ná seo. Cuirfidh
mé fáilte roimh ceartúcháin.
Here in Montreal we have an Irish class - The Hedge School. A girl
from Mayo is the teacher, and lovely Irish she has. In the class, on a
regular basis, there are nine pupils: four from Ireland (3 Dubliners
and one from Co. Louth), a girl from New Brunswick, two girls from the
U.S.A. who live in Montreal, a boy from Montreal and a French Canadian
girl (not sure if this is the correct term). Now and again two other
girls come, but they are young girls and they have other interst
besides, but they are very welcome whenever they are present. It is
wonderful the progress we have made since the class started in 1995.
There is a Catholic Centre in the city that lets us have a room at no
cost every Monday, and it is there the class gathers. There will be no
class after May, when the summer will come (says I, wishfully).
I am ashamed I cannot write better than this. I will welcome
corrections.
