Bay Area

Classes for Beginners in Scottish Gaelic are now being offered in the Bay Area, Northern California, by the Bay Area Scottish Gaelic Learners Association.

Class activities include speaking Gaelic dialogues, reading, and conversing in Scottish Gaelic. The focus of the class is on the specifics of grammar, conversation and pronunciation.

A new beginners class will be starting in September 1997, meeting Tuesday evenings, from 7 to 9 p.m., for eight weeks, to continue in eight-week blocks. The class will meet at a home in Walnut Creek, 10 miles east of Berkeley, located not far from the 680/24 freeway interchange. The fee for the class is $50. New classes begin regularly in April and September.

Also offered is an ongoing class for intermediate beginners, held Wednesday nights, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the same location. The fee is $50 per eight-week block.

The class is taught by Tris King, coordinator for the Bay Area Scottish Gaelic Learners Association, Tris is an experienced drama coach, a California credentialed teacher, and a three-year learner of Scottish Gaelic.

BASGLA also provides a Scottish Gaelic informational table at the Oakland, California Scottish Games on the second weekend in July, and at the Scottish Gathering and Games in Pleasanton, California on Labor Day Weekend.

San Jose

The South Bay Scottish Society sponsors a weekly class in Gaelic speaking. Primary text is "Teach Yourself Gaelic" although other materials are used from time to time. We meet on an informal basis at member's home each week on Tuesdays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

San Diego

The House of Scotland in Balboa Park sponsors a weekly Scots Gaelic class, currently Thursdays from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.. Susan Self, an intermediate, is the facilitator. The class uses mainly the Speaking Our Language video and book series, supplemented by Gaelic children's TV programs from BBC Alba. The class is geared towards beginning and intermediate students, with an emphasis on experiencing the language more than book learning.
