Scottish Gaelic classes in New York

The New York Caledonian Club, through its Scottish Studies Program, offers classes in Scottish Gaelic, in New York City. The classes are for beginning and intermediate students. There are two 11-week semesters, starting in September and January. Classes are held on Tuesdays at the West Park Presbyterian Church located on West 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, New York City, New York.

101 Introduction to Scottish Gaelic
6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.Chapel

Course covers insights into the development of the language and concentrates on grammatical structure, vocabulary, pronunciation and the application of these to the formation of everyday conversational phrases. Textbook: Gaelic by Roderick McKinnon, MA.

102 Intermediate Gaelic
7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.Chapel

Continues the study of advanced grammar and vocabulary with application to the reading and translation of pieces of Gaelic literature. Textbook: same as Course 101. Instructor: Don RossDon studied Gaelic with Larry (William Laird ) Siegel, Bill Aikens and Jane Williams. He is a member of An Communn and completed their summer program taught by instructors from the University of Edinburgh. Don has been leading the Gaelic learning group for the past eight years.

103 Conversational Gaelic Workshop
8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.Chapel

This course will use material from the much acclaimed BBC series for Gaelic learners "Speaking our Language." The course is designed to teach the student the Gaelic language through conversation. The student will learn to converse, with a good Gaelic (Lewis) accent, on everyday topics interspersed with Gaelic songs and poems. This course is ideal for travelers to Scotland, Nova Scotia Canada, or as an introduction to grammatical Gaelic. Instructor: Margaret Macleod Block Margaret is a native Gaelic Speaker born in Stornoway, Lewis, Scotland.
