Down and Out in London and Dublin:
Charles Wilson (c. 1764-1808) and Muiris Ó Gormáin (d. 1788)

Irish and Scottish Gaelic diverge strongly in terms of book production during the eighteenth century. While the latter half of the century saw dozens of volumes of Scottish Gaelic poetry come into print for popular audiences, Irish verse remained firmly rooted in the culture of the manuscript book, even in the exceptional instances when Irish verse did make it into print. This paper is concerned with some of those exceptional eighteenth-century printed anthologies of Irish verse, including one in which the Scottish Gaelic poet Donnchadh Bàn Mac an t-Saoir makes an uncredited cameo appearance. It will focus on the collaboration between the Anglo-Irish journalist and writer, Charles Henry Wilson, who spent most of his life in London, and the prolific Dublin-based traditional scribe Muiris Ó Gormáin. My aim is to delineate some of the boundaries of literary authority and authenticity for consumers and producers of pan-Gaelic books in the eighteenth century.
