'S e Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, thairis air an dà bhliadhna mu dheireadh, a bh'aig cridhe chùisean san obair a dh'ionnsaigh stèidheachadh Ionad Chaluim Chille, Ionad Dualchais agus Foghlam Gàidhlig a dh'fhosglas ann an Ìle san Fhoghar 2001.

Chaidh sgeama airson an Ionaid a chur air adhart leis a' Cholaiste sa chiad dol a-mach an dèidh dhaibh cluinntinn bho mhuinntir Ile air cho dona 's a bha staid na Gàidhlig a' fàs, agus sin ann an ceàrnaidh far an do thòisich eachdraidh na Gàidhlig ann an Alba. Ag obair còmhla ri muinntir Ìle a tha air an riochdachadh le Companaidh Leasachaidh Ìle agus Oilthigh na Gaidhealtachd 's nan Eilean, 's e Sabhal Mòr a chuir cùisean a' dol agus gu h-àraidh a tharraing a-staigh taic bho ghnìomhachas.

Obraichidh Ionad Chaluim Chille Ile mar mheur de Shabhal Mòr Ostaig le stiùireadh acadaimigeach tighinn bhon Cholaiste a chuireas air dòigh cùrsaichean foghlaim aig deifir ìrean suas gu ìre-ceuma tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig.

Tha an t-Ionad, air fhaicinn mar phròiseact lèirsinneach a bhios cudthromach a-thaobh cultair, eaconomaidh agus foghlaim, na cho-obrachadh a th'air suidheachadh an cridhe Ile, Earra Ghaidheal, Alba agus Gaidhealtachd Mhòr na h-Alba agus na h-Eireann.

Ged a bhios Ionad Chaluim Chille Ile fo sgeith Shabhal Mòr Ostaig, thèid a rianachd le a bhòrd urrasairean fhèin agus bidh an comas aige fhèin dol na shàr ionad eadar-nàiseanta san àm ri teachd.

Tha e do-sheachanta gu bheil na tha dol a thachairt ann an Ile a' togail air na tha seachad. A bharrachd air sàr dhualchas nàdarra, tha an dà chuid dualchas cultarail agus dualchas togte air leth beartach ri fhaotainn ann an Ile.

Obraichidh Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle còmhla ri buidhnean coimhearsnachd agus gnìomhachasan ionadail gus goireas a chur air bhonn airson luach, mìneachadh agus tlachd fhaotainn bho chànan agus cultar nan Gaidheal.

Tha Sabhal Mòr Ostaig toilichte a bhith aig an stiùir, turas eile, san ath-bheothachadh seo, ag aithneachadh cho cudthromach 's a tha e gnothaichean fhosgladh a-mach don t-sluagh, cothroman a chruthachadh, misneachd a thogail sa choimhearsnachd, agus an cànan a thoirt air ais do sgìrean far an robh e uaireigin làidir agus cuideachd a' leudachadh ghnothaichean gu h-eadar-nàiseanta

During the past two years SMO has taken the lead role in the formation of Ionad Chaluim Chille (St Columba Centre) a new Gaelic Education and Heritage Centre on the Island of Islay planned to be open in the Autumn of 2001.

The scheme for the centre was first promoted by the college in response to a need expressed by the Islay community for positive action to be taken to deal with the perilous decline in the language, in an area that was of pivotal historical significance to the Gaidhealtachd . Working in partnership with the Islay community, represented by Islay Development Company and the University of the Highlands and Islands, Sabhal Mor has been the catalyst, bringing all parties together and in particular, engaging the interest of the private sector in support of the new centre. Ionad Chaluim Chille will operate as an outreach centre of SMO with the college providing academic leadership and educational opportunity through courses of study at various levels up to degree standard through the medium of Gaelic.

The centre which has been described as a visionary project of cultural, economic and educational significance, is importantly a partnership venture set in the heart of Gaelic Islay and Argyll, Gaelic Scotland and the Greater Gaidhealtachd of Scotland and Ireland.

It is envisaged that whilst operating under the aegis of SMO that Ionad Chaluim Chille, which will be managed by its own Board of Trustees, has the potential to develop into an internationally significant centre in its own right.

Islays future is inexorably linked to its past. In addition to outstanding natural heritage features, Islay benefits from a rich built and cultural heritage. Ionad Chaluim Chille will operate in partnership with local community groups and businesses to provide a community resource for the study, interpretation and enjoyment of the Gaelic language and culture.

Sabhal Mor is once again happy to be leading the way in this vital regenerative process recognising the importance of widening access, creating opportunity, building community confidence, reclaiming the language within its own former heartlands and extending outwards to the international community
