Glenlark

Glenlark (Gleann Láiric — the glen of the haunches or thighs) is a glen in the Munterloney Mountains, more often called the Sperrin Mountains, of County Tyrone. The Glenlark River flows the length of the glen, about seven miles, from north-east to south-west. At the mouth of the glen the river joins with the Owenkillew (Abhainn Choilleadh), coming from the south-east, and they continue to flow west, to become eventually part of the Foyle system.

The upper part of the glen forms the townland of Meenarodda, and the lower part forms the townland of Glenlark, except that the left bank of the river, for the last three-quarters of a mile at the lower end, forms the townland of Leckin.

In the census of 1901, these townlands had population as follows:
Glenlark, 181 persons, in 36 households;
Leckin, 60 persons, in 13 households;
Meenarodda, 1 person in 1 household (a shepherd).
In 2008, only three houses in the glen proper are inhabited, all in Glenlark townland (McNamees, Ballantines, Rendles), two of them by families long resident in the glen. A further four houses around the mouth of the glen are inhabited, two in Glenlark townland (Bradleys, Meenans) and two in Leckin townland (Wards, McGarveys).

Glenlark was one of the last areas in Tyrone where the Gaelic language was natively spoken. Late Gaelic speakers in Glenlark townland included Peter Pat Roe Bradley (1874–1964), John James Neill (or Master Bradley, c1891–1968), John Ned (c1850–) and Frank Ned (c1865–) McCullagh, Patrick McAnena (c1880–). In Leckin, there were Jane William Phetey McCrory (c1880–1962) and her brother James, and Ellen Mary Biddy Devlin (1878–1970). Sound recordings exist of Peter Pat Roe, Jane William Phetey, and Ellen Mary Biddy speaking in Gaelic.

Leckin School was built in 1900. Teachers were Frank Kelly and his wife Alice; John Bradley and his wife Alice; Mrs M.B. McCullagh; Mr Conway; Miss Kathleen McSwiggan. It was one of the last local schools, finally closing in 1977 by which time, due to falling population, it was serving a wide area which included many of the surrounding townlands, and even this area had proved insufficient to keep it in operation.

Here is a map of the glen showing the buildings which existed in 1961–62 (though many of them were already in ruins by that time). Each grid square is one kilometre square. We may call the north-west side of the glen the “Glenlark” side and the south-east side the “Leckin” side, although neither term is strictly accurate. Numbers are assigned to these buildings, or in some cases to a holding which did not contain a marked building, but most pieces of land which lack a clearly visible house are included in the text without being numbered on the map. Click on a number to see the information and pictures associated with a house. The pictures of the houses were taken in 2004 and 2008.

The information about the houses derives originally from a sketch map, drawn from memory by John Keenan of Philadelphia, a native of Curraghanalt townland adjacent to Glenlark, and a former pupil of Leckin School, as were his many brothers. His map showed the relative positions of the houses in Glenlark and Leckin townlands, and supplied the names by which the families were known locally. I am grateful to John's niece, Kathleen Keenan of Toronto (daughter of Anthony Keenan), for giving me a copy of this map. This information been greatly supplemented by Mrs Mary McCullagh of Glenmacoffer (née John Ban Devlin, Glenlark); Mrs Mamie O'Neill, Gortin (née Barney Charlie Bradley, Glenlark); James Meenan, Glenlark (who supplied, in 2008, the lists of present and past owners); Kathleen McSwiggan, Gorticastle; and Garry Pentland, Gortin.  To all of these people we owe an enormous debt of gratitude for their patient contribution to putting the information together. Other sources of information consulted include the official valuation lists from c1860 in the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland; the on-line census listings at Cartlann Náisiunta na hÉireann; the Irish civil registry of births, marriages and deaths; the two volumes of "Meetings and Memories in Lower Badoney" (1995, 2000); and any other available sources of information in the public domain.

The houses are numbered below in accordance with the map. But there are three other numbering systems which regularly appear, in all three of which Glenlark and Leckin are separately numbered. First, in listing the owners, James Meenan numbered the houses. Second, in the official valuation, which began in 1859 and which we follow until around 1971, a house corresponds to one or more lot numbers; and these lot numbers may evolve over time. Third, households are numbered in the censuses of 1901 and 1911; and the numberings differ between the two censuses. It has not always been possible to establish with certainty the correspondence between these other numbering systems and the system used in the map.

In addition to those people mentioned above, thanks are due to Garry and Edith Pentland for their hospitality, and to Rita for enthusiastically joining in the discovery process. Also Clare Lawler; Claire Keenan; Pádraig Ó Baoighill; Francis Clarke. Errors which remain are entirely my own fault; please let me know of any which you find. The family trees, in particular, are somewhat speculative, and are certainly very incomplete. (Hint: maximizing the browser window may help with displaying the family trees.)

Map No 10 — McNamees

• Below road, long concrete road, originally two separate properties, whose past is difficult to disentangle.
The 1962 map shows two buildings.
It seems that the property beside Paul's was a small 1-story house, now built over by sheds,
and occupied successively by Susie, Johnnie and Peter McNamee.
The property beside Walshes seems to have been a 2-storey house, occupied by two Elias McNamees
with a Patrick McNamee between them, then Peter McNamee.
Properties now combined; present habitation is a white dormer bungalow,
built by Peter McNamee near Pauls about 1960, with many outbuildings.

Elias/Elisha also had 625 acres far up the glen on the same side, beyond Argen McCrory's (Glenlark lot number 32
in the Griffith manuscript books and maps, but renumbered Glenlark lot number 15 before the valuation was printed).
Its valuation history is identical to that of the second property here, up to 1887, when it passed out
of the McNamee name. It contained a herd's house, newly contructed around 1870, and probably out of use by 1891.
There was no occupant in census of 1901 or 1911.
Census 1901:

The eldest of Patrick McNamee's family was another Elias, born 1875. In 1901, aged 25 and married to Sarah McCrory or Ballantine, 19, he was living in Oaghmonicrory. Their dau Mary Ann was born there in 1901 (see also 1911 census for map no 23 below), and another dau Susan was born in Monanamale in 1903. He appears to have taken over responsibility for this second McNamee property soon after.
