The BA (Hons) Gaelic Language and Culture degree looks at Gaelic society and its origins, whilst ensuring you achieve a high standard of fluency in the language. In year four, you will have the opportunity of an exchange with Irish or Canadian universities, allowing you to explore the wider international context to which Gaelic Scotland belongs. The skills you acquire on the course will make you ideally placed to take advantage of the many new job opportunities appearing in the Gaelic world today.
DESCRIPTION
The BA (Hons) Gaelic Language and Culture degree develops students’ knowledge and critical awareness of Gaelic language, literature and culture. It also allows students to draw from related subjects covered by sister programmes in the scheme of degrees. This programme balances investigation of historical aspects of language and culture, with an emphasis on contemporary material and issues which affect the Gaelic community. You will study the arts, contemporary and traditional literature, minority language issues and oral tradition, and explore the relationship of Gaelic to other languages, including Irish Gaelic.

UCAS - ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- 3 SQA Higher passes at grades B, B and C or above, including Gàidhlig (fluent speakers) or Gaelic (learners) at B or above; or
- other equivalent qualifications subject to the discretion of the Course/Programme Leader.
You will be interviewed in order to determine which first year language course best meets your needs, depending on your spoken language abilities on entry. Students without an SQA pass in Gaelic must satisfy the college of their ability in Gaelic For applicants with little or no previous knowledge of Gaelic, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig offers An Cùrsa Inntrigidh, a distance learning course which aims to prepare students for entry to year one of the degree programme. The placement module is a core module on this course and a PVG will be required should the student choose to undertake their placement at a school or other childcare establishment.
