DESCRIPTION
The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) award in Language Development has been designed to meet the specific development and training needs of Gaelic organisations and public authorities required to produce and implement a Gaelic language plan under the terms of the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005. It will be of particular benefit to Gaelic development officers, language planning officers, community and economic development co-ordinators and Gaelic education professionals. Students will follow a course of self-study supported by telephone tutorials and access to online learning resources. Students will be expected to participate in seminar-style group discussions looking at the latest research and international examples of best practice. The award may be studied part-time and through distance learning. Each module is usually completed over one semester with two telephone tutorials per week.
COURSE CONTENT
The CPD Language Development consists of two modules:
- Gaelic: Past and Present (20 credits)
- Language Policy and Planning 1 (20 credits)
The aims of the CPD award programme are:
- to provide students with access to teaching, learning and research of the highest standards in language and community development, with a focus on Scottish Gaelic;
- to develop the skills to plan for language and community development by discussing European and other policies and requiring students to draw together theoretical knowledge with practical steps in community and language revitalisation;
- to enable students to enhance employability and professional skills in the field of Gaelic language and community development, or in education, or in another similar field.

Gaelic: Past and Present Language Policy and Planning 1 Student support in Gaelic is available to all students undertaking the CPD through the medium of Gaelic.
PROGRESSION ROUTES & EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS
Depending on previous qualifications and experience, students may wish to undertake further advanced training in a related area. Students may also be interested in benefitting from the language learning opportunities available through the Gaelic & Related Studies Scheme or through other language provision at the College.
UCAS - ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Entry to the course is at the discretion of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. A telephone interview with a member of the teaching staff will be undertaken and those studying for the award through the medium of Gaelic will also be required to submit an example of their writing in Gaelic.
