DESCRIPTION

Gaelic for Educators 1 will facilitate competence and confidence in teachers’ use of Gaelic in the professional setting. Participants will develop their understanding of basic aspects of Gaelic grammar, and the module will target the four language skills of reading, writing, listening and talking, to promote accurate Gaelic language use for leading learning in the classroom or for use in a professional setting. Key grammatical areas will be focused upon through individual tasks, group interaction and collaboration, and translation activities.

COURSE CONTENT

The Gaelic for Educators 1 module will be delivered online through a blended approach with synchronous and asynchronous delivery using the UHI virtual learning environment (Brightspace). The module will be divided into fortnightly sections, providing flexibility for participants where they can work through each section of the module in their own way – either a little at a time or a whole section in one go.

Webinars and live meetings will enable participants and tutors to ‘meet’ with each other and will allow for a learning community to be established. Participants will engage with activities to encourage professional discussion during these meetings. Collaborative activities such as the use of discussion boards will facilitate professional interaction between participants, with a focus on practitioner enquiry and professional dialogue throughout the programme.

For each week, study time is estimated at between four and five hours, and slightly more at assessment times.

We understand the professional demands placed upon teachers and realise that engaging with professional learning may be a challenge in time management. It is our aim to ensure that there is flexibility in the module so that it is possible for participants to focus on their daily teaching commitments while also progressing through the module and completing tasks on time. Module content is designed to relate closely to practice, allowing participants to realise the benefit of engaging with advanced study delivered through the medium of Gaelic.

Participants are expected to develop and enrich language skills through collaborative interactions and translation, and through focusing on the following grammatical areas:

  1. Pronunciation
  2. The verb ‘to be’
  3. Regular and irregular verbs
  4. Noun gender and the article (singular and plural)
  5. The infinitive of the verb
  6. Prepositional pronouns
  7. Grammatical cases: nominative, dative, genitive and vocative
  8. Gaelic Orthographic Conventions
