WELCOME
A very warm welcome to the webpage of Jon Schueler Centenary Symposium and Exhibition 2016.
The centenary of Jon Schueler’s birth will be celebrated during 2016 with solo and group exhibitions both in the US and in the UK, and with an international symposium May 27-29, here at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.
The Sound of Sleat: Echoes, Reflections, and Transfigurations
An international arts symposium and exhibition at Scotland’s Gaelic College on the beautiful Isle of Skye overlooking An Linne (the Sound of Sleat), the inspiration for Schueler’s work over many decades.
Marking the centenary year of Jon Schueler’s birth, this will be both an in-depth look at Schueler’s work and influence as well as a more informal celebration of his life with speakers who knew and worked with Schueler here in Scotland, alongside academic presentations. A solo exhibition of selected work from his Mallaig years, both oils and works on paper will open at the symposium alongside an exhibition by three international Jon Schueler Scholarship artists who undertook residencies at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig 2013 – 2015, Takeshi Shikama, Helmut Lemke & Oliver Mezger.

“Jon Schueler’s decision to move to the Scottish Highlands at the height of his ascendancy in the New York artworld was based on a chance meeting and the notion of a promised land. In 1957 when he was showing as an Abstract Expressionist artist with the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, he moved to the village of Mallaig overlooking the Sound of Sleat. Schueler’s confrontation with the Highland seascape was an intense, emotional experience but his response finds articulation in a remarkably controlled gestural language. At one stroke he lifts the approach to the Scottish landscape out of the drawing room with all its picturesqueness, its ancientness, its ethnographical oddities, its ‘otherness’ into another scale, another intensity, another presence, another ‘self’.
