SpeakGaelic
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is delighted to introduce SpeakGaelic: a new and exciting way to learn Gaelic through a combination of face-to-face and online lessons, BBC television programmes and podcasts.
Community learning is at the heart of our mission as the National Centre for the Gaelic Language, and as a SpeakGaelic partner, we have produced free-to-use teaching materials for community groups, Local Authorities and Gaelic language teachers.
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig will deliver the SpeakGaelic course in different communities locally and nationally, while also supporting other groups to deliver the course. The materials are designed so that Gaelic speakers can use them to deliver classes without prior experience of teaching. Class sizes are normally up to 12 students.
SpeakGaelic is a partnership between Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, MG ALBA and BBC ALBA. We are immensely proud of Joy Dunlop and Calum MacLean, two Sabhal Mòr Ostaig graduates, presenting this pioneering project and helping shape a new generation of Gaelic speakers.
LEARNING WITH SPEAKGAELIC
The first part of the course for beginners (A1) runs over 26 weeks, with a lesson of one and a half hours per week. There are supporting television programmes and podcasts from the BBC, and a website which can also be used for self-study. There will be three further levels of the course – A2, B1 and B2 – to support progression in the language. These courses are designed around the CEFRL scale.
