Winter Online Evening Classes

Online evening classes will begin in October and will be delivered via Zoom.

We hope to add to this online programme over the following months, but if there is a particular online option you would like to see us offer at any time, do please get in touch with us at:

GAELIC FOR IRISH SPEAKERS (ADVANCED) WITH RODY GORMAN

This online course is ideally for Irish-speaking students that have completed one of our beginners’ Short Courses at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, or those with a solid grounding in Scottish Gaelic already.

FIDDLE COURSE WITH CHARLIE MCKERRON

We are delighted to offer an opportunity for our fiddle-playing community to come together online with Charlie Mckerron. With a mixture of tunes, some old and some new, we look forward to bringing you together on-screen from the comfort of your own home. Tunes will be taught by ear, and music will be provided afterwards.

GAELIC LEVEL 5

This course is ideal for learners who understand Gaelic at an upper intermediate level and who can hold a conversation using more detailed structures.

This course is ideal for advanced learners who have a good understanding of Gaelic and are able to communicate well, demonstrating good speaking and writing skills.

GAELIC SONG WITH CHRISTINE PRIMROSE

Join one of Scotland’s finest Gaelic singers for this online course where you will cover a range of song types, such as lullabies, waulking songs, love songs and puirt-à-beul (mouth music); and themes including homesickness, nostalgia, emigration, sailing and the supernatural.

This course is ideal for learners who understand Gaelic at a lower intermediate level and who can hold a conversation using basic structures.

CONVERSATION CLASS (Intermediate)

These online evening classes are aimed at intermediate learners. With focus on a different subject each week, these classes provide an opportunity to expand vocabulary and explore idiomatic phrases, whilst building confidence in your use of the language.

This course is ideal for complete beginners with no knowledge of Gaelic – i.e. those who have NO previous learning such as Duolingo or local classes.

LANGUAGE ENRICHMENT WITH ALEC BHALTOS MACDONALD

This course is designed for advanced students who would like to enrich their understanding of the Gaelic language, and will concentrate on the vernacular as it is spoken in native communities. This will include proverbs, idiomatic expressions, metaphors and vocabulary, which otherwise might not be encountered in a formal learning environment.

PLACE NAMES OF SCOTLAND – LEVEL 1

This course offers an opportunity to learn about the relationship between language and place, culture and landscape within a Scottish context. The course will appeal to anyone with an interest in Scottish landscape, language and culture. The course will be taught in English; no knowledge of Gaelic or linguistics is needed.

This one-day, online course is aimed at anyone interested in the Gaelic names found in our landscape, for example hill names and other common features like bealach, allt and eilean, and is especially recommended to mountain guides and outdoor instructors.

LANGUAGE ENRICHMENT WITH ALEC BHALTOS MACDONALD

This course is designed for advanced students who would like to enrich their understanding of the Gaelic language, and will concentrate on the vernacular as it is spoken in native communities. This will include proverbs, idiomatic expressions, metaphors and vocabulary, which otherwise might not be encountered in a formal learning environment.

GAELIC LEVEL 6

This course is ideal for learners who understand Gaelic at an upper intermediate level and who can hold a conversation using more detailed structures. In this level, you will be introduced to:

  • past tense structures of regular verbs and irregular verbs in all important forms;
  • possession structures;
  • more detailed numbering structures;
  • and the genitive case with plural nouns.

Beginning 14 January 2025
19:00 – 20:30 every Tuesday for 8 weeks

GAELIC LEVEL 8

This course is ideal for advanced learners who have a strong understanding of Gaelic and are able to communicate well, demonstrating good speaking and writing skills. As part of the course, participants will gain an understanding of grammar, have opportunities to practice conversation skills, learn new language techniques and relevant vocabulary.

Beginning 14 January 2025
19:00 – 20:30 every Tuesday for 8 weeks

PLACE NAMES OF SCOTLAND – LEVEL 2

This course is designed as a continuation of the Summer Short Course or the Level 1 Online Course. Whilst it is not essential to have previously completed the Level 1 course, the material will not be covered, so some prior toponymic knowledge is useful to get the best out of this course. The course will be taught in English; no knowledge of Gaelic or linguistics is needed.

every Tuesday for 8 weeks

GAELIC LEVEL 2

This course is ideal for those who have recently started learning Gaelic, or who have previously done some Gaelic.  In this level, you will be introduced to:

  • new prepositions, such as ‘anns’ and ‘às’;
  • prepositional pronouns, such as ‘aig’ and ‘ann’;
  • and comparative structures.

Beginning 16 January 2025
19:00 – 20:30 every Thursday for 8 weeks
