Call For Papers

‘Our three-voiced country’: Twentieth-century cross-currents in Gaelic and other Scottish writing

The 2026 ASL annual conference will be held at, and in association with, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on Friday to Sunday, 26–28 June 2026.

This conference will follow successful predecessors which led to ASL publication of two influential volumes: Crossing the Highland Line: Cross-currents in Eighteenth-Century Scottish Writing (2009) and Gael and Lowlander in Scottish Literature: Cross-currents in Scottish Writing in the Nineteenth Century (2015). A forthcoming volume based on selected conference papers will complete this sequence.

Proposals for papers are invited exploring literary interactions between Gaelic, Scots and English in poetry, drama, the novel, song, media, and education in the twentieth century.

We warmly welcome contributions from scholars and PhD students working in relevant areas. Titles and abstracts for 20-minute papers should be submitted by 2 February 2026 by completing the form below or by emailing:
