TEACHER EDUCATION
Teacher Education at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is a major contributor to the development and learning opportunities for students interested in teaching in Gaelic Medium Education at primary and secondary level, degree level (BA (Hons) Gaelic and Education) and postgraduate level (PGDE – Gaelic pathway). The BA (Hons) Gaelic and Education undergraduate course is offered entirely in Gaelic, giving students the opportunity to strengthen their language and professional skills through the medium of Gaelic. Lecturers on the course have a wide range of professional skills and experience in secondary and primary teaching which make a significant contribution to the programs.
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s Teacher Education staff are also actively involved in professional learning for teachers and students in Gaelic Medium Education:
- Club Irise (Journal Club) – led by Sabhal Mòr Ostaig staff and other educational experts, Club Irise gives those working in Gaelic Medium Education an opportunity to engage with presentations and discussions with other professionals online, with a focus on immersion and bilingual education.
- Oideas – a podcast where professionals working in Gaelic Medium Education chat about their work.
- Glossary of Terms – This is a Gaelic to English dictionary and is a collection of specialized vocabulary which was originally collated and created for Gaelic teacher education courses. If you are seeking the English word, please use the “search function”, ctrl+F.
PGDE Secondary Education (Gaelic)
The PGDE Secondary Education (Gaelic) course is a one-year, full-time postgraduate teaching qualification in Gaelic-medium secondary teaching.

The Centre for Teaching Excellence is being established with a key role in supporting teachers develop their pedagogical expertise.
