Mòd Ghlaschu 2019

It has been another successful year for the Royal National Mòd which was held this year in Glasgow. Gaelic language and culture is at the heart of the work of An Comunn Gàidhealach and it was great to see the Mòd celebrated in Glasgow – a city with the highest concentration of Gaelic speaker in the world. We are delighted that many from the Sabhal Mòr Ostaig community were involved in concerts and competitions during the week. 

Saffron Hanvidge, second year student on the BA (Hons) Gaelic and Traditional Music, received first place in the Puirt-à-beul (Gaelic Mouth Music) competition. The Sabhal Mòr Drama group also put on a great performance which received the prize for ‘Best Play’ with Kenneth Linday also recognised for ‘Best Director’. There was also success for many of our Alumni including: graduate of the Diploma in Gaelic Media, Christin MacKenzie from Lewis, who won the Traditional Gold Medal for Traditional Gaelic Song; Calum McColl, from Fort William, who won the Silver Pendant and Mary MacGillivray, from Islay, who won the Traditional Song Competition for Gaelic Learners.

This year’s ‘Bardic Crown’ was bestowed upon Sandy Macdonald Jones, member of the Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Board of Directors, and recognition for the Gaelic Learner of the Year was awarded to Jenny Black.
