This seminar will also be live-streamed. Register below and a Zoom link will be emailed to you on the day of the seminar.

Dr Tom Stanton is a Senior Lecturer in Geography at Loughborough University. Tom and his team have been visiting Skye since 2023 to research the social, environmental, and historical contexts of marine litter on the island’s coastline.

The team’s work has documented some of the highest beach litter loadings in Europe and has evaluated considerable limitations in international marine litter monitoring and the governance that it informs. Crucially, these observations have only been possible through the generous contributions of the communities that have supported this work. Since 2024, this has included communities in Kintyre, the wider inner and outer Hebrides, and partners operating nationally across Scotland.

This seminar will share the findings of the first three years of our work, which are now in review, across four completed and ongoing projects (50 years of litter on Skye, Siubhal a’ chladaich, Aisle of Skye, and CALMER). It will also look forward to the project’s next steps.
