Applications open for Jon Schueler Scholarship
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the National Centre for Gaelic Language, in partnership with The Jon Schueler Charitable Trust, is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the Jon Schueler Scholarship, a fully funded three-month visual artists’ residency on the Isle of Skye.
The Scholarship provides UK and international artists the opportunity to research, develop, and produce new work in a dedicated studio space overlooking the Sound of Sleat. The dramatic landscape of Skye deeply inspired renowned abstract expressionist Jon Schueler, and the residency seeks to keep his legacy and connection to this place alive.
Donald Barker, Gaelic Arts Development Officer at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, said:
“We’re delighted to launch the Jon Scheuler Scholarship and we’re hoping to see applications from artists across Scotland and beyond. This residency invites visual artists to develop their work in one of the most stunning landscapes in the world, while also connecting with the Gaelic culture of Skye.
“You do not need to be a Gaelic speaker to apply for the scholarship, but you will have the opportunity to respond to Gaelic culture, language, and traditions that play an integral role to Skye’s landscape. We’re excited to see what comes out of the residency.”
Diana Ewer at the Jon Schueler Charitable Trust said:
“Our visual arts scholarship celebrates the life, work, and artistic influence of Jon Schueler. After a hiatus due to COVID-19, the residency is back and stronger than ever, with the selected artist receiving £8,000 as well as studio space, accommodation, travel costs, a materials budget, over the course of three months.
“We’re looking for artists working at the highest levels of contemporary practice who wish to undertake a period of research, development, and production in a unique and inspiring environment, so please do apply.”
Applications are now open and the deadline has been extended until 28th November at 5pm (GMT).
The successful applicant will take up the residency in summer 2026. Full details on how to apply can be found here: Jon Schueler Scholarship
