SABHAL MÒR OSTAIG RANKS SEVENTH IN UK AND FIRST IN SCOTLAND FOR EDUCATION
GAELIC TEACHER TRAINING RETAINS UK TOP-TEN PLACE
The Sabhal Mòr Ostaig-led BA (Hons) Gaelic and Education has been ranked seventh in the Guardian University Guide 2027, alongside three other UHI teacher education programmes – together forming the only Scottish entry in the UK top ten for education.
The programme, led by Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and awarded by UHI, has secured a place among the UK’s ten highest-ranked education providers for two consecutive years, following its exceptional third-place finish in the Guardian University Guide 2026.
The Guardian’s subject rankings focus on the student experience and assess programmes using measures such as satisfaction with teaching and assessment, student-to-staff ratios, continuation rates, academic progress and graduate career prospects.

“We are immensely proud that our Gaelic teacher education programme, which is also delivered remotely to students at UHI North, West and Hebrides, has been ranked among the UK’s top ten education programmes for a second consecutive year.
“To be placed seventh in the UK this year, following our third-place ranking last year, is a remarkable achievement for a specialist programme delivered entirely through the medium of Gaelic. It reflects the quality of the learning experience at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the expertise and commitment of our teacher education staff and, above all, the dedication and success of our students.

Based in the Isle of Skye, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is Scotland’s National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture. It is the only further and higher education institution in the world whose programmes are delivered entirely through the medium of Scottish Gaelic.
Through its Gaelic teacher education provision, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig prepares graduates to support the continued growth and development of Gaelic-medium education in schools and communities across Scotland.
