Counselling Services
Students at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig can access three confidential counselling services:
- Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s on-campus face-to-face counselling
- UHI’s Online Counselling Service by email or Skype (text)
- Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s Online Counselling Service by email or Skype (text)
The face-to-face counselling service is most suitable for students studying on campus at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. However, if you are studying at a distance but live locally to Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, you can and may wish to attend face-to-face counselling. Further information about this service is available here.
This service is also available to staff at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.
As an academic partner of UHI, students enrolled at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig can also access the UHI Online Counselling Service. For further information, click the green button below, or go to https://www.uhi.ac.uk/en/students/support/online-counselling
The Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Online Counselling Service is offered primarily to distance learning students who are not able to access the face-to-face service, but if you are studying on campus it may be more convenient for you to access a counselling service at a time and location that suits you.
This service is also available to staff at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.
Counselling is currently offered in writing only, either by email or by texting on Skype.
If you choose email, we will contract for a number of email exchanges and you can write your email at a time and location which suits you. You will usually receive a reply once a week.
If you choose Skype, you would type to the counsellor in real time, similar to face-to-face work but in writing instead of talking.
Online counselling may be suitable for the following issues:
- a wish for change
- abuse: emotional, physical, or sexual – ongoing or historical
- anxiety
- bereavement and loss
- bullying
- depression
- difficult emotions including anger, envy, jealousy and shame
- relationships
- self-esteem and/or confidence
- sexuality and gender
- stress
- other issues related to your studies, work or personal life.
It’s useful if:
- you enjoy expressing yourself in writing via text and computer
- you’d prefer to take time to consider what you want to say and read back the exchanges
- you can’t get to a therapist for face to face sessions
- you want to cut down on waiting times which exist in many places
Online counselling may not be suitable for people currently experiencing suicidal thoughts, and you are encouraged to contact the following:
