PGDE Primary Education (Gaelic)

In order to facilitate and further extend Gaelic-medium primary education, it is important that there are opportunities for students to access suitable teaching programmes. Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is part of the UHI network offering PGDE Primary Education (Gaelic), a one-year, full-time postgraduate teaching qualification in primary education (Gaelic pathway). Although the course is offered in several colleges across the UHI network, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is able to provide an additional opportunity to study in a supportive and immersive Gaelic environment.

The teaching bursary in Scotland provides bursaries of £20,000 and is open to those looking for a career change into teacher training in Gaelic as a secondary subject, Gaelic medium across all secondary subjects and in primary. Further information can be found here: teachingbursaryinscotland.co.uk

Course Content

As well as college learning, students will undertake 19 weeks of professional practice placements in different Gaelic-medium primary settings. Professional Practice sessions in Gaelic teaching will be delivered by experienced Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Teacher Education staff. Gaelic-medium subject students will also be provided with Professional Practice sessions in their specific subjects through the medium of Gaelic.

Additional Support

There is an additional opportunity during college weeks to attend a language class to consolidate skills in preparation for Gaelic Medium teaching. Additional funding may be available for Gaelic-medium student teachers.

Entry Requirements

Applicants to the PGDE Primary Education (Gaelic) must have:

  • a relevant undergraduate degree;
  • a National 5 (or equivalent) qualification in Maths; AND
  • a Higher (or equivalent) qualification in English.

Gaelic will also be assessed as part of the selection process.
