Over the last couple of decades scholars have begun to understand how the monks of early medieval Iona designed their monastery as a representation of Jerusalem. Of course, all churches everywhere ‘represented Jerusalem’ in some sense. This paper will explore the possibility, however, that Iona was also representing the spatial and symbolic landscape of Rome.
