In this talk, Kayleigh explores the intersection of games and culture, examining how video games can engage wider audiences with minority cultural heritage and language. Drawing on her background in game development and her lifelong connection to the Scottish Highlands and Islands, she combines these passions to explore how games can meaningfully represent the language and culture.
She delves into the concept of cultural authenticity, the role of intangible cultural heritage in game design, and how these ideas can be embedded into a culture-first development pipeline. Kayleigh will showcase her ongoing research in this area, along with a demonstration of her practice-based research output, Waulking Simulator. A rhythm-based game that celebrates the process of waulking and song.
