About the course
A ground-breaking, internationally acclaimed Masters degree, the MSc in Material Culture and Gàidhealtachd History offers you a unique opportunity to investigate Gaelic culture – entirely through the language of the people themselves.
The degree is divided into three parts: PG Certificate; PG Diploma; and the Research Dissertation.
You can take the course part-time: this permits you considerable flexibility in choosing modules for each semester, and in making progress through the course. Usually the MSc takes three years to complete.

Whether you already know the history of your own district, or have a grasp of wider Gaelic tradition and Gàidhealtachd history, the MSc offers you the chance to focus your knowledge and take it to a new level, supported by some of the most able scholars in the field.

Since the course began we have enjoyed a lively mixture of students from different backgrounds. The research they have undertaken has already made a notable contribution to Gàidhealtachd scholarship. Today, alumni from the course are involved in the cultural and natural heritage sectors; in the world of music and the arts; and working on PhD dissertations.
What are the entry requirements?
You should possess a 2:2 Honours degree or above in a relevant subject, such as Gaelic, Celtic, Geography, History, or in the Social Sciences.
We also welcome candidates without such qualifications but who possess professional experience in relevant subjects. A good standard of fluency in Gaelic is necessary.
