New Head of Research appointed at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture, are delighted to welcome Abigail Burnyeat to the post of Head of Research at the College.
Abigail Burnyeat was educated at the Universities of Cambridge and Glasgow and was Lecturer in Celtic and Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh. She works on Gaelic narrative and the great Gaelic heroic tales, from medieval manuscripts to contemporary storytelling, as well as on the Celtic Revival in Scotland, and children’s Gaelic reading.
Principal of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Dr Gillian Rothach, welcomed Abigail to the post saying, “Abi will greatly add to the research environment at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. She will encourage students and staff to further develop their research skills in the form of publications, research projects and knowledge exchange initiatives. Abi will add to the College’s reputation as an exceptional environment for research conferences; and she will guide SMO’s preparatory work for taking part in the Research Excellence Framework exercise 2021.”
Abigail has also organised a number of ground-breaking conferences in the field of Celtic Studies, and has worked with schools, national institutions and arts organisations to bring Gaelic tales to new audiences through educational projects, performances, and exhibitions.
She says: “I am excited to be joining Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and to have the opportunity to work with its excellent researchers, to strengthen its national and international links, and to support research at the heart of the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture.”
