Special Events to mark closing of Helmet Lemke’s Jon Schueler Scholarship at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig
In closing his Jon Schueler Scholarship at Sabhal Mor Ostaig Helmut Lemke presents aspects of his artistic practice and ongoing work.
On Wednesday the 8th of October in the Talla Mòr from 7.30pm he assembles an event of experimental sound / music / poetry and performance. Helmut will perform on an installation of long strings – long strings are an ever changing site-specific instrument that he begun to play around 30 years ago. The strings correspond in length to the venue where Helmut performes and can be up to several 100 meters long. Helmut will be joined on that night by Sabhal Mòr’s Visual Artist in Residence, MacGillivray, Kenny Lindsay (Writer in Residence), Bàrds Rody Gorman and Meg Bateman + guest artists. The line up is still evolving and an exciting and intriguing evening is guaranteed!
On Wednesday, the 22nd of October, Helmut will share thoughts and preliminarty results from his residence. He will show drawings in response to the sounding environment of Sabhal Mor Ostaig. He will talk about his time here and how the support of the Community of Sabhal Mor Ostaig and the close encounter with Gaelic language and culture has influenced his project. Helmut is working on a publication of a book (to be published in early December). A first glimpse into the content and the layout of this book will be part of the evening. This is taking place at ACC from 7.30pm and then moving to the Art Studio in the Fàs building.

The John Schueler Scholarship is a unique partnership between Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and the Jon Schueler Charitable Trust, with support from the Royal Scottish Academy, and complements the existing artists’ residency programme at SMO which is currently supported by Creative Scotland. The scholarship is offered each year to a an international artist running from 2013 – 2016. It has been established to celebrate and remember the life, work and artistic influence of internationally renowned artist and abstract expressionist painter, Jon Schueler (1916-1992), and in recognition of his very special relationship with the landscape and environment of the Sound of Sleat.
