Gaelic Census Results Seminar – Online
Wednesday 13 November 2024, 09:00 – 10:30
The 2022 Census results for Gaelic have come at a very propitious time, just as the Scottish Government is considering major new legislation in support of the language.
The results show continued decline in the overall number of speakers of Gaelic in the Highlands and Western Isles but surprising growth elsewhere in the country.
What do these results mean for the Government’s plans in the Scottish Languages Bill currently being debated in the Scottish Parliament? Join us at this short, online seminar to discuss the Bill in light of the latest results. Iain Mac an Tàilleir (Sabhal Mòr Ostaig) will present the first in-depth analysis of the latest census data; Wilson McLeod (Professor Emeritus, University of Edinburgh) will consider the results in the context of the proposed legislation and the latest consultation, and Kate Forbes (Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Gaelic) will present the Government’s case for the current legislation.
The seminar will be conducted in Gaelic with simultaneous translation into English.
