“Inspired by Geraldine Parsons’ paper in this lecture series on Gráinne’s lullaby to Diarmaid, ‘Cotail bécan bécan béc’, I have begun to investigate the motif of sleep in the Gaelic tradition. My paper is very much a work in progress as I assemble examples of sleep as a road to dreams of arcane knowledge or of desired states, as an empowering rest before fighting, or of suspended animation leading to transformation and renewal. I will ask if such motifs should be linked to the symbolism of gestation before birth, night before day and winter before summer.”
