The 18th and 19th century displacements experienced by thousands of people in the Scottish Gàidhealtachd had dramatic consequences – both for the region itself and for the places that received them. While this talk uses the shared history of the islands Eigg in Scotland and Cape Breton in Nova Scotia to explore some of them, it will also focus on the shared responsibility of researchers to deal with the complex legacy of colonisation, displacement, and resettlement. It will highlight some of the ways in which scholars from both sides of the Atlantic are bringing their knowledges together to facilitate deeper and more constructive understandings of our past.
Dr Karly Kehoe is a Professor of History at Saint Mary’s University, Nova Scotia, Canada.
