Kenna was born and raised in Upper Bayble, Lewis, in a Gaelic-speaking community. Educated locally and then at Jordanhill College of Education, she graduated with qualifications in Primary Teaching, Additional Support Needs, and Early Years Education. She taught in both Lewis and Glasgow before moving to Nova Scotia in 1979, where she actively contributed to Gaelic development. In 1989, she returned to Scotland and settled on the Isle of Skye, working with Highland Council in Gaelic education across various roles until her retirement in 2022.
