With parents from Point in Lewis and Berneray (Harris), John was raised in Applecross and Carloway, before the family moved to Stornoway when he was 15. A former student of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, John also has degrees in economics and an MBA. After a spell in the oil industry, and in sales and marketing in London, John taught at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and Lews Castle College, before working in Canada, Switzerland and the Netherlands. John retired in 2022 and has moved back to Stornoway.
