The college offers the following guidelines as assistance; students should make themselves familiar with these guidelines before caravans and tents are brought to the campus.
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is not an official campsite and as such we do not have dedicated facilities for tents and caravans. We are willing to consider allowing caravans to come to the college campus by those who are attending our courses at times when the college accommodation is fully booked.
Campers and caravan users are responsible for their own health, safety and security whilst on the campus. Campers and caravan users must also accept that this IS NOT a campsite and that we DO NOT have dedicated camping or caravan facilities.
You are required to inform the short course department if you intend to stay in a caravan. While the college will do its utmost to meet each request for a caravan space, we cannot guarantee that an appropriate space can be found, as the college campus is always busy with employee and student vehicles – particularly during the summer months.
Be aware that dedicated electric hook-ups for caravans are not available at the college. However, if a caravan with appropriate connections is located close to the college, a request can be made to connect the caravan to a college building at a cost of £5 per half working-day: morning (8am to 12pm) or afternoon (2pm to 6pm). If an electric connection is needed through the night, the cost will be £10 per night. This must be arranged with the short course team at the time of Monday morning registration, and paid beforehand.
Under no condition may caravan sewage waste be disposed of at the college.
You are required to inform the short course department if you intend to stay in a tent. You will be advised as to where the tent should be placed, as well as on the following points:
- Smoking in tents is strictly forbidden.
- Campers must leave at least 6m (20ft) between tents.
Toilets are available throughout the day and night on the old campus, Àrainn Ostaig. Please be aware that these facilities are available to all users of the college, and can be particularly busy due to their location near the Talla Mòr, where events are frequently held. Showering facilities are not available at Àrainn Ostaig.
Showering facilities are available in the main building at Àrainn Chaluim Chille, and are open between 8am and 10pm each day.
For reasons of health and safety, BBQs and camping stoves may not be used next to tents or caravans. In the instance that they are used, we will ask that any such barbecues or fires be extinguished. Food may be purchased throughout the day at the college, and BBQs/stoves may be used in the stone amphitheatre only, which is located behind the main building.
Refuse must be collected and placed in the bins located throughout the college and its campus, and all camping and caravan sites must be left in the same state in which they were found.
Campers will not have access to kitchens and common rooms within accommodation blocks. Campers will, however, have access to the Comunn nan Oileanach common-room portacabin at Àrainn Ostaig, which is equipped with a microwave, a small fridge, a sink and toilet. Please note there is no cooker, and portable camping stoves must not be used inside the building at any time.
