Gaelic in the Landscape – Online: 07 February 2026

This course consists of two sessions:

Session 1: 10:00 – 12:00
Session 2: 13:30 – 15:30

We see Gaelic placenames all around us in Scotland, especially when out in the hills. Have you ever wondered how to pronounce the mountains ‘Liathach’ or ‘Spidean a’ Choire Sheasgaich’ correctly? Are you intrigued about the difference between a sgùrr, a cnoc and a meall? Would you like to understand the meanings of the names of mountains, passes, rivers and skerries to give you an insight into their characteristics or history?

This online course, Gaelic in the Landscape, is aimed at anyone interested in the Gaelic names found in our landscape, for example hill names and other common features like bealach, allt and eilean, and is especially recommended to mountain guides and outdoor instructors. Over the course of the two sessions (each two hours long), you will crack the secret of Gaelic pronunciation and learn what the most common land features mean. You will then be able to apply your knowledge to a wide range of names you come across when out and about.

No knowledge of Gaelic is necessary.

The course will be delivered through Zoom and will comprise a wide range of interactive activities to help you learn new words in a relaxed and fun way. Sound files and course materials will be provided to participants.
