Gaelic Education: Past, Present, Future
15, 16, 17 JUNE 2023
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Isle of Skye
As part of the commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, we would like to announce a conference on Gaelic education, bringing together researchers, teachers, other educational practitioners, the wider community and all those with interest in Gaelic education. We hope that it will provide an opportunity to explore and discuss Gaelic education in the widest sense; to investigate and share challenges and best practice, and to come together to think about what Gaelic education will be like – and should be like – in the future.
We welcome proposals for papers, round tables, posters, workshops and other practical sessions from researchers, teachers, students, and educators of all sorts.
Possible subjects may include:
- Gaelic-medium education, bilingual education, immersion education
- Education in other Celtic-language and minoritised language contexts
- Tertiary education
- Immersion and other language pedagogies
- Educational materials and resources
- Curricula and evaluation
- Fluency and related challenges
- The role of families and communities in Gaelic education
- early years to Adult education
- Online education
- Cultural and place-based education
- Musical education
- Informal and community education
- History of Gaelic education and education in the Gàidhealtachd
- Challenges and opportunities in Gaelic-medium Education
As well as the academic programme, we hope to offer practical sessions and workshops that will be useful for teachers and educators as well as to wider communities of interest.
