Sabhal Mòr Ostaig marks 35 years of Gaelic media training with new scholarships
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is celebrating 35 years of Gaelic media training with the launch of two £2,500 scholarships for its DipHE Gaelic Media course.
The National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture launched its first Gaelic broadcasting Diploma in 1991, when the Gaelic Television Training Trust was established.
The scholarships, designed to encourage talented Gaelic speakers into media careers, will support two students joining the DipHE Gaelic Media in the coming academic year, 2026–27.
Employment rates for the Diploma remain strong, with 22 of 26 graduates (over 80%) from the past five years working in the industry. Course alumni – including Somhairle Johnston, Calum MacLean, Karen Elder, Catriona Lexy Chaimbeul, Ramsay MacMahon and many others – are active across Gaelic media, education, and the wider creative industries.
Catrìona NicIain, Media Course Leader at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig said:
“For 35 years, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig has played a key role in developing Gaelic media talent and strengthening Gaelic broadcasting.
“If you go to any production company in Scotland that creates content for BBC ALBA, you are likely to find one of our graduates. We are proud of the contribution our graduates have made – and continue to make – across the sector.
“These scholarships are about supporting talented Gaelic speakers to develop the skills, confidence and experience needed to shape the future of Gaelic media.”
The DipHE Gaelic Media has evolved alongside the changing media landscape, while maintaining a strong focus on practical, industry-facing training through the medium of Gaelic.
Applications for the scholarships are now open on Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s website, and close at midnight on 12 August 2026.
