Public Consultation on Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s Gaelic Language Plan

Members of the public will have the opportunity to submit views on Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s second Gaelic Language Plan as part of the public consultation on the draft of the new plan. Sabhal Mòr’s first Gaelic Language Plan was published in 2012.

The draft plan was prepared under the provisions of the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005. Under the Act, public bodies are requested to prepare statutory language plans which help with efforts to strengthen the status of Gaelic in Scotland and develop the use of language. The College’s plan sets out the ways in which Sabhal Mòr Ostaig intends to enhance the status of the language and develop the use of Gaelic over the next five years.

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s Principal, Professor Boyd Robertson, said: “As the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture, the language is at the core of the College and is used as a medium of teaching, learning, research and scholarship and as the language of the workplace and of communication. This second Gaelic Plan sets out how we aim to build on the existing strong base and how we intend to strengthen the College’s Gaelic environment in the years ahead.”

The Plan builds on the College’s Language Policy and will further support the use of Gaelic among students and staff at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. The draft plan is available to view below, or a paper copy can be requested by contacting the College’s Language Development Officer, Janni Diez, on 01471 888440. The consultation ends at 5pm on 12 May.
