Teaching Pathways and Professional Learning – Courses and Funding Opportunities
Do you want to become a Gaelic teacher? Whether you are looking for a new career or if you are already a teacher, we have learning pathways for you.
If you already have a degree and you are fluent in Gaelic, then our PGDE Gaelic Pathway may be the course for you – 9 months working towards a Gaelic/Gaelic Medium teaching qualification at either primary or secondary level.
If you are already a Gaelic teacher, you can gain specialist professional learning through the MEd in Gaelic Education – a part-time course delivered online. The degree enables participants to utilise the knowledge, skills and professional understanding that they have developed throughout the programme to support improvement in their own work setting.
There are plenty of opportunities in Gaelic Education here at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. Please contact us with any questions you may have – applications are open until 31.05.2026.

Funding opportunities
The Teaching Bursary Scheme is open to those wishing to teach ‘Primary Education through the Medium of Gaelic’, ‘Gaelic as a Language/Subject at Secondary Level’ and ‘All Secondary Subjects through the Medium of Gaelic’. You must be fluent and able to read and write in Gaelic to apply for these Gaelic Education courses.
There is also the opportunity to access additional funding from Bòrd na Gàidhlig’s Gaelic Teacher Training Grant. This will be open for applications in July 2026 and aims to provide support to those training towards a career in Gaelic teaching or Gaelic early learning and childcare who require additional financial support to complete their course.
