Profile
Gavin teaches on the BA (Hons) Gaelic and Development course and the MSc Material Culture and Gàidhealtachd History course. His main interests are in rural development, sustainable development, social history and migration.
He researches in particular the links and comparisons between the Highlands of Scotland and Norway. He recently spent a sabbatical year studying the Highland galley from song and poetry, comparing them to traditional Norwegian ships. He has also written an MPhil dissertation on what will keep crofters crofting, compared to small farmers in Norway.
He is involved in these subjects practically, as a crofter, town clerk and board member of the ‘Am Bàta’ project which collects marine culture and imparts boatbuilding skills to young people.
