Family Learning Week 2024

Seachdain nan Teaghlach, the longstanding Gaelic Family Learning Week organised by Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and The Highland Council, is set to return to the Isle of Skye 08–12 July 2024, 20 years since the first event of its kind took place in 2004.
Parents of children in Gaelic Medium Education (primary school or early years) are given the opportunity to attend Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s popular language courses while their children take part in a wide range of sports, arts and outdoor education activities through the medium of Gaelic.
Dr Marsaili NicLeòid, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Vice Principal, said:
“Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s immersive Gaelic campus is the perfect location for Family Learning Week, which is a fantastic opportunity for families of children in Gaelic Medium Education to come together and learn and make new connections with other Gaelic families.”
Chair of Highland Council’s Gaelic Committee, Cllr Calum Munro added:
“What a great way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first Family Learning Week. I am delighted that this partnership event by Highland Council and Sabhal Mòr Ostaig will bring great opportunities for parents and children to develop their Gaelic language skills. Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the Isle of Skye provides a fantastic setting for the programme of activities such as sports, drama, and outdoor learning that will be provided in Gaelic enabling participants young and older to practise their Gaelic speaking skills.”
In 2023, 30 families (42 parents; 52 children) from across the Highlands, Islands and Central Belt took part and all spoke enthusiastically about the benefits of learning and playing in a Gaelic-speaking environment at the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture in Sleat, South Skye.
