DUKE AND DUCHESS VISIT SABHAL MÒR OSTAIG AS ROYAL PATRONAGE ANNOUNCED
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh this week visited Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture in the Isle of Skye.
The visit comes as His Majesty The King confirmed that he will continue his Patronage of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, which he formerly held as Prince of Wales.
The Royal visitors were welcomed by representatives of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Highland Council, local bagpipers, Highland dancer Amy MacKinnon, Bun-sgoil Shlèite pupils and a whole host of community groups from across Skye and Lochalsh.
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Principal Dr Gillian Rothach said:
“It has been a huge honour to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh to Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. This has been a great opportunity to highlight the power of work that is being done here to deliver world-class learning and research opportunities in the Gaelic language and culture, both online and at our uniquely immersive Gaelic campus.
“The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh’s visit included a tour of the Kilbeg development, our public/private partnership producing 29 new affordable homes on campus, as well as attending a Gaelic class with visiting students from Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts.
“We were also delighted to learn that His Majesty The King has announced that he will continue his Royal Patronage of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, helping shine a light on the great work of our staff, students and partners to champion the Gaelic language and culture both nationally and internationally.”
The Duke and Duchess finished their visit with a lunch and musical performances at Àrainn Chaluim Chille joined by Sabhal Mòr Ostaig staff, students and community groups from across Skye and Lochalsh, including representatives from: Portree High School, Plockton High School, Fearann Eilean Iarmain, Fèis an Earraich, Sleat Historical Society, LMPA Academy, SEALL, Camuscross & Duisdale Initiative, The Trotternish Centre, Portree & Braes Community Trust, Clan Donald Land Trust and Armadale Castle.
