PRAISE FOR SABHAL MÒR OSTAIG CLASS OF 2023

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s class of 2023 graduated in Sleat on Friday (06 October).
Guests, lecturers, staff and students gathered to celebrate 59 graduates picking up undergraduate and postgraduate awards from the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture, with six first class honours degrees awarded, among many other prizes.
The list of graduates includes 11 new Gaelic teachers, who are already teaching pupils across Scotland on their probation years.

As part of the ceremony, the prestigious Sàr Ghàidheal award was also presented to Allan Campbell and Christine Primrose for their outstanding contributions to the Gaelic language and culture.
Dr Gillian Rothach, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Principal, said: “The future is bright for this inspirational group of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig graduates, who are full of talent and enthusiasm for the Gaelic language and culture.
“Lifelong friendships are made at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, and we look forward to keeping in touch with all our graduates as part of our growing Alumni Association, and perhaps welcoming some of them back for further study with us in the future.”
One graduate travelled all the way from his home in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for the graduation. Guillermo Santana-MacKinlay was awarded a first class honours degree in Gaelic Language and Culture, as well as the Farquhar MacIntosh Prize for his exemplary academic skills. Guillermo, a fluent Gaelic speaker, said:
“I am really grateful to those who encouraged me to study at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. The BA in Gaelic Language and Culture has given me a much greater understanding of the Gaels through the centuries, their folklore, literature and heritage.
“I had fantastic support whenever it was needed from the teaching and admin staff as well as the library team at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.
“I am now going to continue my studies, first of all with the Professional Development Award (PDA) in Gaelic Translation, and perhaps follow that with an MSc or PhD in the future.”
