SABHAL MÒR OSTAIG WINS HERALD EDUCATION AWARD 2026
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig has received the Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community award at the Herald Education Awards 2026 in recognition of its role as lead partner in the Kilbeg community development.
The Kilbeg development is the first new architecturally planned village in the Isle of Skye for over 100 years. Just under 20 homes have been built on land adjacent to the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture so far, and the village is now a bustling community, with many Gaelic speakers living and working in close proximity to Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.
Herald Education Award judges looked for evidence of commitment to areas such as local employment, community volunteer schemes, charity work, environmental initiatives, and local product sourcing.
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Director of Development, Dr Donnie Munro said:
“Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture is delighted to receive this prestigious award.
“Since its inception, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig has recognised the critical role that the regeneration of the Gaelic language and culture plays in the socio-economic well-being of our communities, and the Kilbeg Village development is a further manifestation of that holistic approach towards achieving impactful and lasting benefits for the community.
“Access to affordable housing is a key component to creating sustainable and economically active communities, that place Gaelic at the heart of community life, and we at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig are proud to have led on this important initiative.”
Kilbeg is a creative partnership between lead and facilitating partner, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the Communities Housing Trust, The Highland Council and Skye-based construction company James MacQueen Building Contractors Ltd.
